Hiawassee City Council Agenda/Minutes For July 7 2026

The City of Hiawassee May City Council meeting was called to order at 6:00pm on July 7, 2026, in Council Chambers by Mayor Jay Chastain, Jr. The meeting was open to the public and broadcast over Facebook Live. 

Present, in addition to the Mayor, were Council members, Andrea Bell, Scott Benton, Jeff Scott, Nancy Noblet and Jonathan Wilson. Staff present were Economic Development Director Lily Ponitz, Deputy City Clerk Sheryl Branson and City Clerk Bonnie Kendrick

The Invocation was given by Council member Nancy Noblet and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

The agenda was amended to add 8.5 -Business License Ordinance

Motion to approve the agenda as amended was made by Council member Nancy Noblet and seconded by Council member Scott Benton, with all in favor.

Motion to approve the Consent Agenda which consisted of the minutes of June 2, 2026, Council Meeting, minutes of June 30, 2026, Work Session Meeting, the April and May 2026 Financials and the payment of the PBC Loan from SPLOST (26,535.89), a motion was made by Council member Andrea Bell and seconded by Council member Scott Benton, with all in favor.

Motion to table the Aclarian contract pending attorney review was first made by Jonathan Wilson and seconded by Jeff Scott with all in favor.

Motion to approve the second reading of the Home Rule Ordinance-Hearing Procedures for Removal of Officers, Section 5.15(B)(1) of the Charter, was made by Council member Scott Benton and seconded by Jeff Scott, with all in favor.

Motion to direct Attorney Thomas Mitchell to draft and execute a contract termination with American Tank was made by Council member Jeff Scott and seconded by Council member Scott Benton, with all in favor.

Motion to approve the contract with Southern Tank was made by Council member Scott Benton and seconded by Council member Jeff Scott, with all in favor.

Motion to approve the contract with Lead Online for $2,396.00 was made by Council member Andrea Bell and seconded by Council member Scott Benton, with all in favor.

Motion to approve authorizing City Attorney to file suit or take other legal action against the Holiday Inn Express, its owners and operators was first made by Jeff Scott and seconded by Nancy Noblet, with all in favor. 

Motion to approve the Business License Amendment Ordinance was first made by Nancy Noblet and seconded by Scott Benton, with all in favor.

There being no need for executive session, motion to adjourn was made by Council member Jeff Scott and seconded by Council member Jonathan Wilson, with all in favor.  Meeting adjourned at 6:04pm.
